  • The Safer Drive 65 project is an Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) initiative to improve approximately 13 miles of I-65 between Blue Lick Road in Clark County and S.R. 56 in Scott County. The project focuses on adding travel lanes, reconstructing pavement, and upgrading key infrastructure along the corridor. See the Improvements page for more information.

  • The project spans approximately 13 miles along I-65 in Clark and Scott counties, from Blue Lick Road to S.R. 56.

  • Key improvements include:

    • 5.5 miles of full pavement reconstruction from Blue Lick Road to just south of the Henryville Rest Stop

    • An additional travel lane in both directions from Blue Lick Road to just south of the Henryville Rest Stop

    • Bridge replacements, widenings, and repairs. Includes bridge replacement and widening of the I-65 bridges over Blue Lick Creek and Caney Fork, a deck overlay of the I-65 bridges over Pigeon Roost Creek, and widening of the I-65 bridges over Brownstown Road. Minor rehabilitation work will also occur on the County Line Road bridge over I-65.

    • Pavement rehabilitation in select areas 

    • Culvert repairs

    • Installation of a 1,400-foot-long noise barrier located 0.5 mile south of the interchange with S.R. 160

    • Replacement of an automatic traffic recorder located 0.5 mile north of S.R. 160

  • The Safer Drive 65 project will address aging pavement, correct subgrade and drainage issues, and accommodate projected traffic volumes, improving long-term safety and performance by reducing congestion.

  • Drivers can expect better traffic flow, reduced congestion, and improved safety measures along the corridor. The project is also designed to meet future transportation needs.

  • Construction is expected to begin in late summer 2025 and continue through 2028.

  • The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is leading the project, with construction managed by a joint venture between E&B Paving, Inc. and Milestone Contractors.

  • Yes, temporary traffic shifts and construction phases will occur. INDOT will share updates to help motorists plan ahead and minimize delays.

    • Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in both directions of I-65 during daytime hours for most of the work. 

      • Single lane closures may be implemented during daytime hours for isolated construction activities. Duration will not exceed 7 days at any location.

    • Single lane closures may be implemented during overnight work hours as needed for completion of the work.

    • SR 160 ramps will remain open to traffic during construction, except for limited short-term closures up to 7 days to complete ramp resurfacing.

    • SR 56 ramps will remain open to traffic during construction.
